Kratom (Mitragyna speciose) is a classic and evergreen tree of South East Asia. The leaves of the tree contain mixtures that can have hallucinogenic (mind-altering) effects. How kratom affect the brain?

Can a person overdose on kratom?

According to 2019 analyzing data paper from the National, Poison Data System, they found that from 2011 to 2017 there were 11 deaths reported related to kratom exposure. Nine of deaths reported involvement of kratom plus other drugs and medicines, which include diphenhydramine (an antihistamine), alcohol, caffeine, benzodiazepines, fentanyl, and cocaine. 2 deaths were reported exposure from kratom alone with no other drug or substances. In the year 2017, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recognized 44 deaths related to it, with at least one case investigated the use of pure kratom. The FDA noted that many of the kratom related deaths seemed to have resulted from mixed products or taking kratom with other drugs or substances. These substances include illegal drugs, opioids (painkillers), benzodiazepines, alcohol, gabapentin, cough syrup. Also, there have been some reports of kratom packaged as nutritional supplements or nutritional ingredients that were mixed with other compounds that caused deaths. People should check first with their health care providers about the safety of mixing kratom with other medicines and drugs.

Is kratom addictive?

Just like other drugs, kratom might cause addiction, which means users will feel physical extraction symptoms when they stop taking the drug. Some users also have reported become addicted to it. Mostly withdrawal symptoms include:

  • insomnia
  • muscle aches
  • jerky movements
  • aggression
  • irritability
  • hostility
  • runny nose
  • emotional changes

How is kratom addiction treated?

Those people who get addicted to it, they are looking for a treatment to cure their addiction and get rid of it, but there is still no precise medical treatment or medicine for kratom addiction. Those people who are seeking treatment have found behavioral therapy to be helpful to get rid of this addiction. Scientists need more time to do research and experiment to decide how effective and operative can this treatment option is for the addiction treatment of Kratom.

Does kratom have value as a medicine?

Recently, some people used kratom as an herbal and verdant substitute for medical treatment in efforts to control extraction symptoms and hunger caused by an obsession with opioids or to other addictive substances and drugs such as alcohol. There is no scientific proof or confirmation that kratom is effective, operative, or safe and harmless for this purpose, there is still further research is needed to prove it.
